Assignment #3 Self-Reflection Essay

For this rhetorical analysis, I analyzed the structure and organization differences of 3 lab reports. After reading and annotating the three lab reports, I noticed that they each used different structural methods to organize and deliver their content to the best of their abilities. Sections where I saw the biggest differences were in the methods and abstract sections. I use the body of my rhetorical analysis analyzing and describing these sections in detail.

Throughout the rhetorical analysis I think the focus is clear and consistent, flowing from one idea to another efficiently. My analysis towards methods and abstract are clear and the ideas of the two are connected successfully in the conclusion. In terms of content, I do not digress or go off topic, giving an appropriate word count to each section of the rhetorical analysis.

In terms of structuring my rhetorical analysis, labeling the lab reports, “Reports #1-3” helped refer to the lengthy titled lab reports easier throughout the body paragraphs and conclusion. Another area of this piece I am proud of is the paragraph right before the conclusion. I chose to briefly point out where the lab reports were similar, to expand my credibility beyond the abstract and methods section, which I spend a large portion of the assignment analyzing how they’re different.

I fixed some mistakes I made in my previous assignment. This time, I got another person to proofread my assignment. This was very helpful as this person pointed out not only grammatical errors, but also organizational errors. The proofreader suggested me to break down the part about the methods section into smaller paragraphs rather than one big paragraph, as if it were a mini essay within the larger assignment. My proofreader also gave me other advice, which I did not take. I also made improvements in my methods by proof reading my assignment every 10 minutes to point out any grammatical errors.

One area where I think I can improve in this assignment is my utilization of evidence and quotes. I only use one quote from the three lab reports. Every other time I referred to the lab reports I paraphrased or only referred to the labels, which did not require citation. In order to improve my utilization of quotes and evidence in any given assignment, I will improve my annotation skills by picking out 1-15 quotes that stand out that I must incorporate into the assignment. This use of quotes will only improve my credibility and let the reader know my familiarity with the sources I chose.
